burlap home decor

While out and about I came across these:

Please excuse the window reflection... I captured this while out and about on an early Saturday morning.

Maybe it's because I grew up in an old Victorian home, but something about the vintage French country look always appeals to me. Oh, I don't know that I'd do it in my own home (white is just a disaster waiting to happen for yours truly) but I dig the idea of it. I want to be all over it. So I ooohhh and aaahhhh every time I come across some goodie that I wish I could make work for me!

Maybe you can make it work for you?

look, we have a house (kinda)

And voila, the almost finished exterior of our home to be:

Isn't she pretty? That's right, I think our house is a she. Which leads me to the ultra important question: What should we call her? Hmmmm... maybe I should wait until we move in to find out what her temperament is. After all, she may be feisty or zen and the same name wouldn't capture both natures... Yup, best to way until she's lived in before officially naming her.

I would just like to draw your attention to the proper car parking that is occuring in this photo: Paul's car is in the driveway, leaving the garage for me and Lucy (my beetle). Isn't he such a thoughtful husband? Always saving the best for yours truly? Yeah, I know, he's a keeper (I'm so waiting for a snide reader comment from Raol or Pablo... )

So that's it... the house is almost done on the outside. Just a little more siding to go on the front porch. On the inside they're added walls. Now comes all the other stuff: cabinets, toilets, doors, etc. I can hardly wait! Soon, my precious, soon...

kitty approved

Over here at lotus tree crafts, we believe in keeping things real. So in keeping with that credo, please note that any object created, gifted, or purchased from yours truly comes with it's own personal Mayla the cat stamp of approval:

Why yes, my desk always looks this messy... sometimes even more so!

Mayla personally takes it upon herself to supervise each and every creation. You can trust that if she doesn't approve, she makes sure that she interjects herself into the process and says, via head butt, "Marya, this is just not up to snuff, please start again!"

project life:weeks 11 and 12

Week 11

So Paul got an iPhone and life asI know it will never be the same... This past week has been all about documenting that change, from his douchy photo shots, to his new photo texts...

Also up this particular week was attending wrestlemania. Honestly, I never thought this was something I would do in my life. But it was fun. A little long but a fun experience. That said, it's probably not one that I would do again! Once was more than enough.

Other events of the week: the weather outside was delightful. Seriously. It was like spring almost summer weather. I've never seen such a warm March in Montreal. It inspired some spring eco cleaning/purging and some candlemaking. It was a busy and productive week!

Week 11

One of Paul's family traditions, amongst the older generation of his aunts and uncles, is to celebrate their name day. In other words, to celebrate the date of the saint they were named after. I guess it's very old school Catholic, or rather, a Slovenian tradition. The first day of the week was my father in law's name day party (Monday was St Joseph). Anyways, the family came over for a big lunch so many of my pics this week come from that day. Pictures of my nephews, an image of the card we gave Joe for his special day, the family, Joe at the bar, a photo my nephew took of me.

The last photo on the page is a little odd, I know... but it's because it was so nice out that I actually went and ate lunch outside in the graveyard right by my work. That probably seems really macabre, but when you work in a college full of 18 year olds, it's nice to go somewhere that is just really quiet. And let's face it, graveyards are about as quiet as you can get sometimes!

I also ate supper one night with a friend on a bench, overlooking the river.

To all my friends back home in the rain.... who normally laugh at my still snowy Marches in Montreal... know that I'm thinking of you all and gloating, just a little bit, about our beautiful weather!

Since I took so many shots of my nephews, I made a page dedicated to my nephew's outdoor antics!

I made this page in February but decided to add it on the backside of my other page because the rest of my week layout felt very home based.

And our home now has vinyl, inside walls and some appliances.

Two busy weeks done, another 40 to go!

etsy store update: colour choices for stationery sets

After thinking about how popular this particular stationery set is in my etsy shop, I thought it was high time to do something about offering it in different colours.

So here they are, for colour consideration:

Look at all that colour! Isn't it fun? I don't know about you, but I wouldn't know which to choose now that there are so many options.

Well, maybe I would... after all, I did pick a colour to feature the item in!

red, grey, white and black

Lately I'm obsessed with it. I can't help it. It's everywhere I look and I like it! (I would like to officially blame my mother for this latest trend obsession - if she hadn't raised me surrounded by her love of red and black I think I may have resisted this obsession, but since I associate these colours with home... I was doomed from the start).

all these photos come from our visit to the recent Montreal home show

I never thought, especially as a petulant teen, that I would be somone who would gravitate towards this colour scheme. Call it teenage mom rebellion if you will. But here I am, contemplating a living room in these exact colours. Oh, the ironies! Hell, we even just bought a washer and dryer in red (don't worry, I didn't pay extra for the colour... I'm not that frivolous)! But hey, if they cost the same price as the others.... why not go for the fun colour to make doing laundry more pleasurable? Every time I open the laundry closet I'm going to tee hee... you just want and see if I don't.

Ok, but seriously. Do you ever worry about embracing colour trends? Cause I do. I mean, how many houses can you walk into and date right away by the colours of the fixtures, paint, etc? (Interesting sidenote: I used to be able to do this with Starbucks' back in the day... hey, you spend 5 years working for a company... you start to know things about their design phases). Maybe this isn't something that others notice. But I do. Again, I blame my mother for this design observation and the ensuing concerns it creates for me.

What this all boils down to is this: dusty rose and grey said 80s, sun, moons and stars are the 90s (blue and yellow), and tans & dark floors are the early 2000s. Will grey, red and white be part of the trends that define the 10s?

All in all, I know know that I have to let go of these concerns and just accept, on Paul's woebegone behalf, that that's what renovations and paint are for 5-10 years later!

tee hee....

more list love

More list madness! Some of these lists were easier than others!

This one was just downright fun. I didn't think I would hear such random but intriguing comments but some of them were pretty fanfrickentastic!

I felt like I was completely at a loss to talk about family traditions, even though I know we have them. The prompt sort of made me realize that I really want to/look forward to Paul and I creating our own traditions when we have our own home together.

Yeah, this was a "meh" list for me.

I love this paper and it worked for me better in theory than it did when I actually went to write on it. Note to self, bold papers need something to tone them down for journaling!

There are just so many favourite memories. These are just some that struck my fancy today.

If only I had more time... or not!

crochet project

Ok, so I took it upon myself to learn this new stitch that essentially makes a rope in crochet.

On the video showing the stitch it looked so easy. In reality, it looks more like this:

And it doesn't get better...

I now have some very sore fingers from manipulating thread!

sock girl stationery

So I recently acquired 2 new stamps that I'm going to use to make some new stationery for my etsy shop.

You're probably confused, what's this etsy shop that I speak of....

I know, I never talk about my etsy shop.

But it continues to exist and do well in the stationery section in particular. And I'll be honest, this sometimes surprises me as stationery is quite simple to make, whereas the origami ornaments are not. Go figure. Sometimes that's just the way things go.

But a few of my stationery sets sell repeatedly and are quite the hit in the treasury circuit. I'm a little embarrassed by how often my singing in the rain paper gets featured by users. Embarrassed, but obviously quite pleased. I should offer it in different colours.

Really must get on that, sooner than later. But I digress...

This post was to tell you all about the fact that I'm going to add these 2 lovely ladies to my stationery collection.

I'm not usually one for the cutesy stamps. In fact, no offense to those of you who do love them, but I actually kind of abhor them. But these, well, I could make an exception for because they have striped socks and really, who doesn't love striped songs?

Have I ever mentioned that stripped socks make me happy? They do. And so do these ladies because they too dig the stripes!

Oh yeah. Stripped sock stamped stationery. Who wouldn't want some?

site overhaul

So I've been hard at work, revamping the blog lately. Here's a screenshot of it from my iPhone (pardon the blurriness of the image):

The image isn't exact either, it does some weird line thing on the left hand column, but whatever, as long as it sort of represents what I've done, good enough! I think that I'm happy with the way it's turned out so far. I was going with a bit more minimalism and white space. An overall less cluttered look.

What do you think? Does it work?

comments always welcome!

I've decided to move my comments over to disqus

Initially I was hesitant about the move, but after seeing it at work on several blogs and realizing the benefits, I've decided to add it here!

Why? For one simple reason. Disqus makes it super easy to keep track of all your comments and the replies to them, across the interwebs. And frankly my dears, I think that rocks.

I love not having to remember to check back on a blog, because frankly, I never remember. When I use disqus, the response just shows up in my inbox, prompting me to go check.

I feel like this system really encourages people (who are willing to sign in via whatever service works best for them) to participate more in blog discussions. Always a good thing if you ask me!

The one catch?

If you want to comment, you have to click on the actual blog post in order to see the comment option (and it takes a few moments to load).

high fashion?

I tend to march to the drum of my own style. While I can wear your average, everyday wear, I'm not the ideal candidate for high fashion because I don't particularly love much of it.

This is more my style:

Now, if only winter would cooperate and be done already so that I can start wearing summer shoes!

for the love of lists

And the lists go on...

There are a lot of things I need to say no to. But maybe, just maybe, these are the biggies. Well, at least for today...

And my happy places are filed under a top secret, sealed for secrecy. The problem is... I don't remember where they are now...

I had a hard time with this one because honestly, it was a rough day for yours truly. But I suppose that makes it the perfect time to sit and reflect on what is good in my life right now...

It's a vague, ambiguous list. Just the way I like it: Mysterious! Well, ok, not all mysterious. And I should add to the list a disclaimer. Paul downloaded the Gotye album for me and it's about a 50/50 hit/miss for me. I love the famous song, like others, and not so much the rest. So yeah. Glowing recommendations and all...

Best thing about this prompt: I learned to draw a cape. But not a superhero one, more like a Vlad the Vampire one. But they, that used to be my thing years ago, which brings me to the last list for this post:

There are many things that I was doing 10 years ago, but these were the things I was going through at that exact moment in time. I was 25, trying to figure shit out, still, and struggling to build a life in Montreal at the time.

project life: week 10

Still plugging along on Project Life:

It was a pretty mellow week, all in all, at least in terms of picture taking. Note to self: must remember to take more pictures of all the little things (hee hee, Paul is going to love it)!

If you see the blank square that's where Paul's card will go when he tells his story of the week. I know, I know, you're always missing Paul's funny stories cause he takes to long to make the blogging deadline. What can I say. Send your complaints to him, via his blog. Just saying, cause you know, he likes the attention and all!

But I would just like to take a moment to appreciate the picture directly above, because honestly: HOLY SMOKES BATMAN, I have a lot of white hair now. Shite! When did that happen? Craziness I tell you. Craziness.

list love

As previously mentioned, I'm participating in a monthly list project and here is what I have so far:

So far it's been an interesting project. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with these lists down the road, you know, in the big move and paper shuffle/purging that will have to occur at that time. But I suppose that really, I should be asking myself that question with a great many of the things I create! How much of it all will I honestly keep over the years? The scrapbook pages, of course because they're photo albums for my family. But the lists? The art journal pages?

What do others do? I wonder...

project life: week 9

So Paul has finally finished his journaling tags so I can post this week's update. Which brings to mind the following question: when you involve others in chronicalling your project, do you struggle with their dissent? Because this week was all about Paul dissenting!

From having his photo taken in places he doesn't want to be a model in, to reminding me of the things I say all too often, to outright acts of scrapbooking defiance:

The rest of the week fared a bit better as the home was the model more than Paul (and he's happy to pose in the new digs, so less resistance overall):

It was a busy week in many ways and it was a bit challenging to narrow down the photo selections. I didn't want to post 20 million house pics, you know... Cause the open walls are only so exciting for the rest of you!

List Love

Like I've mentioned before, I am a glutton for punishment and always need too many projects on the go! My most recent addition is 30 days of list making!

Look, I made a fun book for it:

And the inside:

And here is my first list day:

Yeah, that's it for now... maybe I'll pondering the deeper meaning of my lists in other posts, but not today!
